30+ Years Now Estimated Lifespan of US Solar Plants

Over 76 gigawatts of solar has been installed in the United States to date. For perspective, the estimated output reduces the same carbon emissions as planting over 10.6 million mature trees or reducing the consumption of over 72.5 million gallons of gasoline.

The industry itself really started booming after the implementation of the 2006 federal investment tax credit (ITC) to ease the cost of going solar – providing a 30% tax credit against the cost of every purchased system array. 2020 marks the first year that the legislation mandates the percentage to decrease to 26%, and that number will continue incrementally decreasing to 10% by 2026.

Solar power, as of now, is as affordable as it ever will be in the foreseeable future. The uncertainty of tax credits, paired with an unpredictable grid infrastructure, may create a sense of urgency to increase solar adoption in the US this year. Luckily, this sense of financial urgency is met with a new report from Berkeley Lab:  Solar plants are getting even more affordable to maintain with longer operating lifespans. This is great news for the 2,500+ solar plants throughout the country and anyone receiving electricity from them.

In 2007, the assumes lifespan for utility-scale solar plants were roughly 21.5 years. Today, that lifespan is projected to be upwards of 32.5 years – and while O&M costs are currently considered “rock bottom” after the industry was able to slash costs by up to 50%, a substantially longer life for modules means a lot more power output for the initial investment. Most financial agreements last about 20-25 years, but the system itself is always paid off well before reaching a second decade.

As the solar industry continues to evolve and mature, the focus is slowly being pivoted toward optimizing the performance in the long run vs additional cost-cutting, according to a recent quote from Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables principal analyst, Daniel Liu. “The thinking is that in some cases, O&M costs may be higher, but the tradeoff is that overall plant availability – and therefore energy production – will increase.”

These findings are yet another step in the right direction toward mass solar and storage adoption that will not only provide more reliable and sustainable energy, but will continue to serve as a method to combat climate change.

How America Is Seeing A Resurgence In Large Scale Solar Production

The future is always an exciting prospect. On a macro scale, human and technological advancements can see a net positive result of progress, knowledge, and humanitarian enlightenment across not just one country, but the entire globe.

But when it comes to energy production, it’s easy for the debate between clean and fossil-fuel energy to seem much more grim. That’s because renewables are trying to solve a problem, and fossil fuel profits are trying to perpetuate it.

Nevertheless, there’s reason to look on the bright side. Solar energy may have seemed like a fever dream in the 90s, but today, over 100 cities are almost entirely powered by solar energy. That’s significant progress, and the good news doesn’t stop there. Solar energy capacity has increased by 60% in the past 5 years, and the US and China account for two-thirds of global growth in solar power

As one of the two biggest leaders in the race to adopt cheaper/cleaner renewable energy, the US government is, despite words to the contrary, seeking to get a step ahead China with the recently approved 3,000-ache solar farm in Palm Springs, California. The new solar farm will produce 450 MW of energy – enough to power 117,000 homes.

America used to have the largest solar farm in the world, which produces enough energy to power 250,000 homes, but large solar farm construction has given way to residential solar growth as other countries began to outpace America’s large-scale solar development.

Currently, America’s largest solar farms only rank 9th and the 10th largest in the world, but large solar farms are experiencing a resurgence. Thanks to community solar programs, large solar farms are being used to power entire communities at discounted prices that can’t afford individual panels on each of their homes. And large solar farms aren’t reserved only for the sunniest states – a project in Iowa recently began development of three large solar farms that will account for 750 megawatts for the state alone.

With the resurgence of large-scale solar development in America, we can look to the future for the potential for success while simultaneously recognizing the status-quo’s penchant for failure

But no matter if you the glass half full or half empty, there’s no mistaking that the future of solar energy is bright.

The Effects of Climate Change We are Living with Right Now

Fires, floods, drought, death – our world is already in peril and we’re running out of time to reduce the effects of climate change that we’re already experiencing.

California suffered from another spate of wildfires last year. And it seems that about 90% of wildfires in the state are started by humans, or their equipment. Even when winds are high, vegetation is dry or temperatures are soaring, there needs to be some kind of ignition to jumpstart these wildfires. This statistic expands beyond the borders of California, though. Researchers found from 1992 to 2012, human activity was responsible for 84% of wildfires, and 44% of the area that burned, nationally.

Australia, also in the news recently, has already seen its fair share of climate change-related devastation with all the damage that’s been done to the Great Barrier Reef from marine heat waves. The southern part of Australia has warmed by 2.7 degrees since 1950, a statistic consistent with worldwide human-caused warming trends. Coupled with an unusually warm and dry year, Australia has also been experiencing the effects of a weather pattern known as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) for the past two years. One main effect is reduced rainfall and drier-than-average conditions, which is fueling the bushfire devastation sweeping the country. The fact that this pattern has been in play for two years in a row is unusual, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. In addition, smoke from these fires have even traveled to South America, over 9,000 miles away.

According to NBC News, approximately 32,4000 square miles (as of January 7th) have burned, exceeding the area of land burned during the Amazon rainforest fires of 2019 by 5,000 square miles. In comparison, 405 square miles of land burned during California’s wildfires.

Climate change is actively affecting us in other ways as well, including the food we all eat. The CO2 accumulating in the atmosphere due to the presence of fossil fuels is changing the composition of fruits and vegetables; in turn, it makes them less nutritious. All of the extra CO2 is speeding up photosynthesis and causing plants to grow with more sugar and less zinc, protein, and calcium, among other important vitamins. Coffee supply is also suffering in Brazil — the world’s largest coffee producer. Frequent rainstorms cause typical growing areas to be less suitable to house the crops.

Have you noticed you’ve been sneezing more frequently? That’s because allergy seasons are becoming longer and more intense. As temperatures warm, plants release pollen; as this is happening at times when allergies aren’t persistent, the season is extended. If greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase through the end of the century, it could extend the oak pollen season (for example) by up to 8 days in certain areas.

Relief is a distant concept at this point. As the fires ravage, the floods pour in, and the weather warms, the environment will be reshaped forever – but we can help slow the negative effects. What can you do personally? Every little bit counts: Recycle. Adopt the use of renewable energy. Take public transportation. Consider plant-based foods. Be conscious of energy use and try to cut back where you can.

If we can all pitch in and make even little changes, they will eventually go a long way. Let’s help save the world while we can.

We encourage you to help by contributing to organizations like these:

Suntuity Announces “GreenTech” Solution for Commercial Home Builders

Suntuity, a global solar developer, financier and EPCM headquartered in central New Jersey, has announced a “GreenTech” Solutions package for commercial home builders that is designed to upgrade a standard home into an efficient, renewable energy driven structure that can serve as its own microgrid.

Suntuity, through its subsidiary Suntuity Solar, provides the turnkey solution that is fully financed and includes equipment such as solar panels, battery storage, and/or EV charging stations. Suntuity Solar, through its relationship with Tesla, also offers the Tesla Powerwall for eligible homeowners. The solution includes complete design, support, project management and accounting services for its GreenTech Solutions Dealers.

“GreenTech Solutions are important for our energy future,” said Suntuity’s Director of Business Development, David Christophersen. “With the increase of green energy adoption and the rise of smart homes, it’s apparent that more and more homeowners acknowledge the importance of energy efficiency and autonomy while lowering the carbon footprint to help slow climate change.”

Suntuity’s GreenTech financing solutions ensure that most homeowners can qualify for its renewable and energy efficiency package. A study released by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that solar panels can also significantly increase the value of a home due to both electricity cost savings and the “green cachet” associated with solar PV. According to the report:

“Home buyers consistently have been willing to pay more for a property with PV across a variety of states, housing and PV markets and home types … The study found that the “PV premium” adds about $4 per watt, or roughly $15,000 to the value of a home, based on an average-sized 3.6-kilowatt system. The premium holds across various states, housing and PV markets, and home types.”

In addition to the solar portion of the GreenTech Solutions package, the growing consumer adoption of electric cars like the Tesla and the increasing awareness of climate change offers a new marketing opportunity for custom home builders and other renewable energy businesses. According to a recent Bloomberg NEF report, over 2 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2018.

The GreenTech Solutions package is available exclusively through Suntuity-certified home builders. For inquiries about pricing and becoming a Suntuity GreenTech Solutions Dealer, please contact David Christophersen via email at david.christophersen(at)suntuity(dot)com.

Suntuity Delivers One of New Jersey’s Largest Rooftop Solar PV Systems at Aurobindo Pharmaceuticals

Suntuity, a global turnkey solar energy solutions provider headquartered in central New Jersey, has delivered one of the state’s largest contiguous rooftop solar PV systems at Aurobindo Pharmaceuticals’ new half a million square-foot warehouse facility in East Windsor. The installation compliments Aurobindo’s continued commitment to sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint in correlation to their other solar arrays, including a 30 megawatt (MW) solar power plant in India.

“We procured, engineered and installed enough solar panels on the facility’s roof to offset about 50% of the location’s expected average yearly electric consumption,” said Dan Javan, CEO of Suntuity. “We’re excited to continue on the path of building sustainable business practices that directly affect the bottom line of our customers and partners, which include pharmaceutical giants like Aurobindo Pharmaceuticals.”

The nearly 17,000 Solar World panel installation (which is now owned by California-based solar manufacturer SunPower) boasts a capacity of over 5.5 megawatts (MW) with an estimated annual output of over 6,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) projected within the first year of activation. This is enough power to operate over 600 average US homes for an entire year. From an environmental perspective, the system reduces the annual carbon emissions equivalent to over 1,000 vehicles and 5 million pounds of burnt coal. The solar PV installation is one of many similar commercial and utility-scale projects completed by Suntuity worldwide.
